SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A new preschool has opened in Spokane Valley after another Montessori school closed suddenly in the winter of 2023.
This closure left many families heartbroken and unsure of their next steps.
“It was devastating. It was very last-minute,” said Colin White one of the parents affected.
He along with other community members decided to step up and create a new Montessori School. While in the same building, the way it operates is different.
“First thing is it’s a nonprofit. The other one was a for-profit school. The other thing it’s overseen by parents. That their kids may or may not attend here, but they’re part of the community as a whole,” White said.
The school follows the Montessori philosophy of teaching, which is focused on a child led approach.
Taylor Aichel, White’s wife, said this environment has worked well for their kids.
“Everybody learns differently. And we found that this was the type of environment that really catered to kids that learn differently,” Aichel said.
For both Aichel and White, the hope is that this new facility helps address the childcare shortage in the community.
“Being able to give that flexibility to parents to go and be able to work a full day…. is one of the things that this school is really providing,” White said.
The school operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and has 25 spots available for enrollment.
