SPOKANE, Wash. – Faith Leaders and Leaders of Conscience (FLLC) organized a gathering outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in downtown Spokane Tuesday. The event was a prayer vigil in the same place as where large protests probe out two weeks ago.
However, the event, called “Truthful Tuesday,” is described as not a protest, but rather a place to grieve and spread the golden rule: love thy neighbor.
“We were showing a love for community, with love for our neighbors and love for our country. And it’s not the division. It’s not snagging people. It’s not denying justice,” said Jessa Lewis, a member of Faith Leaders and Leaders of Conscience.
Organizers say the emotions driving both the vigil and the earlier protests are the same, even though they are portrayed differently.
During the vigil, people prayed and listened to speakers who talked about acceptance. Latino en Spokane, a local organization that works to empower the Latino population in Spokane addressed the hardships that immigrants in the community are facing.
FLLC plans to hold these weekly gatherings to give people of all faiths and philosophies a chance to come together and spread the message of the golden rule.
