SPOKANE, Wash. — Fire crews put out another brush fire along Upriver Drive on Tuesday. It was the 12th fire set on purpose in the area this month.
The Department of Natural Resources fought the latest fire. Fire officials say all 12 fires have been set between the Camp Sekani biking trails and Boulder Beach, a popular spot for outdoor activities.
“There can be a lot of damage to life and property. And that’s our number one concern. Keeping everybody safe. It’s an enjoyable place for a lot to recreate,” said Captain Jeff Higens of Spokane County Fire District 9.
Fire crews know these fires are intentional because they happen at the same time, in the same area, and don’t have trash or debris around them.
“We’ve always had problems in Spokane with transient fires, warming fires, but these are more consistent in nature. And the uptick in the number of fires is definitely a concern for us,” Higens said.
The fires worry officials because hot, dry summer weather could make them spread and become dangerous.
Spokane County Fire District 9, the Department of Natural Resources, the City of Spokane, and Spokane Valley fire departments all help in that area, depending on where the fire starts.
“We’re probably going to do some research, combine notes,” Higens said.
Fire officials want the public’s help to catch whoever is setting these fires.
“We’re contacting normal residents that we see in the area, making them aware. You know, knowledge is power. And so that’s something we’re going to work off of. And we definitely need the public’s help to help us,” Higens said.
People who visit the area are concerned about the fires. Randy Hendricks was kayaking at Boulder Beach when he heard about them.
“It’s sad. I’m not sure why, but it’s sad nonetheless,” Hendricks said.
Fire District 9 asks anyone who sees a fire being started or sees anything suspicious to call 911. They should note what the person looks like and what they were wearing.
