SPOKANE, Wash. — Eastern Washington’s local congressman is congratulating President Trump on bombings in Iran over the weekend.
In a statement, Rep. Michael Baumgartner said he fully supports Trump’s “Midnight Hammer” operation.
The attack targeted Iranian nuclear sites. Iran launched missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar in retaliation Monday, but all the missiles were intercepted.
Congressman Baumgartner said he prays for peace, but stresses Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
Rep. Baumgartner’s full statement can be seen below:
It’s time to congratulate President Trump and our brave servicemembers for a job well done. There is no greater threat to the world than nuclear proliferation, let alone from a regime that has consistently used radical Islamic terrorists to attack and kill Americans for nearly four decades.I fully support President Trump’s decision to bomb Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Trump gave Iran a choice. The Ayatollah chose poorly. While Presidents Obama and Biden tried to appease Iran with cash and cajole them with promises, President Trump has spoken in the language of the Middle East – they listen to force.I served in the State Department in Iraq in 2007-2008 alongside Ambassador Ryan Crocker and visited the Middle East again a couple of months ago. During the Iraq War, and in Afghanistan, the clerics who run the Islamic Republic of Iran were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans.President Trump warned them that we would not allow them to have an atom bomb and urged them to take a deal, but they refused. Now, the theocratic regime has a choice – it can come back to the negotiating table, scrap the nuke program, and live in peace with its neighbors. Or the regime can expect more of the pounding they got from the “Midnight Hammer” operation carried out in the early hours of Sunday morning. We all pray for peace. No one wants this war to escalate or for more lives to be lost, but it would be suicidal to allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. The isolationists who want the United States to sit on the sidelines while the world passes them by are wrong, as are the old guard who want forever wars to remake the world in our image. But sometimes we must show strength when our vital interests are at stake, and not be afraid to act. That’s what happened this week, and I’m proud of the job accomplished by President Trump and our service members.
