SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Community College partnered with Jubilant HollisterStier to launch a biomanufacturing training program this semester.
“We partnered with SCC to launch a program, an introduction to biomanufacturing,” said Tyler Wolf, who oversees Jubilant HollisterStier’s production team. “We put together a curriculum that covers the foundation of everything we do.”
The curriculum covers basic biomanufacturing operations. Students learn skills that apply directly to industry jobs.
The Introduction to Biomanufacturing program guarantees students an interview for an internship with the pharmaceutical manufacturing organization after completion. The partnership addresses the need for skilled workers as the biomanufacturing industry grows in Spokane.
Jubilant HollisterStier manufactures sterile vaccines and medications. The company makes injectable cancer drugs, heart imaging agents and antifungals.
“We’re not just creating jobs. We want to create careers,” Wolf said.
Student Chad Borges switched from psychology to biology after seeing the career opportunity. He recognized the industry requires specialized skills.
“I know it’s a hard industry to get into unless you’ve done a lot of college for it,” Borges said. “They built a freeway to get right in there, learning what you need to become a competent and capable employee.”
Spokane has more than 70 life science companies. Students who don’t find the right fit at Jubilant HollisterStier can explore opportunities with other companies in the area.
