SPOKANE, Wash. – Sitting at 27-27, the Spokane Indians are the model of average through the first stretch of the season, at least on paper.
They’ve won just one of nine series so far, and players like pitcher Hunter Omlid say there’s a new name for the team floating around the squad.
“We’re the Spokane Splitters, we have that little nickname going on in the clubhouse, but we’re getting ready to change that around this week,” Omlid said. “I’m just proud that with the season that we’ve had, and how we’ve split a lot of series, we’ve come back every week, and we’re able to just continue to win with our backs against the wall, and do our best to at least split a series. So, now we’ll be able to win some.”
Omlid also spoke on the chances to step up and fill in pitching roles with the recent ascensions of McCade Brown and Welinton Herrera to Double-A Hartford.
“It’s just another opportunity for us to step in their role. And gives us a reason… even more of a reason to go out there and prove to ourselves and prove to everybody else that we can take on the role that they were in, and just each day just try to succeed and do the best that we can,” Omlid said.
The Indians play tonight against the Hillsboro Hops in Game 4 of their week series.
