SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — As you head out to enjoy the Inland Northwest’s summer weather, police warn that your fun could quickly turn into frustration if you’re not careful about protecting your property.
With families flocking to lakes and hiking trails across the region, law enforcement agencies say property crime is already on the rise as the days get warmer.
Spokane Police report that vehicle prowling and other thefts often spike during the summer months, when people are more likely to leave valuables in their cars or forget to secure their homes.
“It’s easy,” said Lieutenant Jeff Isaac of the Liberty Lake Police Department. “Whether it be the 4th of July or ‘Barefoot in the Park’ events, there are many different things out here that attract others. And so, we see that significant increase.”
Lieutenant Isaac said Liberty Lake can see a 50% increase in crime during the warmer months, with the uptick starting as early as April.
Police say that while vehicle break-ins are common, they’re not the only concern. Open garage doors and unsecured belongings in yards can also attract thieves looking for crimes of opportunity.
“Be a good neighbor. If you see that your neighbor’s garage door is open, let them know,” said Officer Micah Prim with the Spokane Police Department.
Officers recommend always securing your belongings, checking in on those around you and keeping communication open with neighbors and police.
