SPOKANE, Wash. — A record number of Americans hit the road and took to the skies over Memorial Day weekend, signaling a busy start to the summer travel season.
The Transportation Security Administration projected it would screen more than 18 million passengers and crew members between Thursday and Tuesday, marking one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods on record.
The Federal Aviation Administration expects flight volume to steadily increase throughout the summer, with peak travel anticipated by late July. Thursdays are projected to be the busiest travel days of the week nationwide.
At Spokane International Airport, passenger volume is on track to surpass previous records. Airport officials say the busiest departure window remains between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and overall daily traffic is expected to peak between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with more than 4,000 passengers arriving, departing, or connecting during that timeframe.
In June and July alone, an average of 8,500 outbound seats are scheduled daily through Spokane, representing a 13% increase from last year. Airport officials attribute the growth to expanded air service to key markets including Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
To help travelers navigate the busy season, the airport recommends arriving at least two hours before boarding and ensuring carry-on items comply with TSA guidelines.
Passengers are also reminded to carry a Real ID-compliant form of identification. While travelers without a Real ID can still fly, they will be subject to additional screening procedures. TSA reports that 93% of passengers currently present the proper identification.
With travel demand surging and new routes boosting capacity, officials urge flyers to plan ahead and stay informed to ensure a smooth journey this summer.
