SEATTLE — Washington Attorney General Nick Brown is one of 20 attorneys general across the nation filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit challenging President Trump’s executive order blocking refugees from entering the country.
Executive Order 14163 indefinitely suspends entry for refugees through the U.S. Refugee Assistance Program and terminates agreements and funding for related agencies.
The attorneys general say this order is unlawful because the Immigration and Nationality Act states that in order to suspend entry of a specific class of people, there must be evidence that those people are detrimental to the national interest.
The brief also claims the order is illegal because cutting federal funding for resettlement organizations directly affects those organizations’ ability to meet the basic needs of refugees.
“Washington has a long history of welcoming refugees and won’t be dissuaded by the president’s illegal executive order,” Attorney General Nick Brown said. “We’re proud to file this amicus brief in support of those in need. Every community is made stronger by their presence.”
Brown and the other attorneys general say that refugees are beneficial to their state and say that they have made active decisions to welcome refugees.
