SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane residents have a new outdoor space to explore.
On Thursday, the city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a 100-acre expansion to Palisades Park in west Spokane.
The city acquired the land in 2022, which includes a new trail for public use. The expansion is located on the north side of the existing park at Rimrock and Houston.
Palisades Park, just west of downtown Spokane, is known for its stunning views overlooking the city. The new trail provides access to the expanded area while also serving as a conservation measure.
“I couldn’t be more pleased. It is the culmination of such a long-held dream by not just myself, but so many other people who in their own way, have contributed and made it all happen over decades,” said Craig Volosing, a longtime Palisades neighbor and founding member of Friends of Palisades.
Volosing has devoted countless hours to advocating for the park’s recognition, upkeep, and trail development.
“The new trail is basically the public’s avenue for enjoying this wonderful addition to the park,” Volosing added.
The trail design balances public access with environmental protection.
“Looking at the best routes to have a trail, looking at those sensitive areas. Because when you’re out here in this natural landscape, there is a lot of sensitive environmental impacts throughout this area,” said Garrett Jones, the director of the city of Spokane’s Parks and Recreation department.
The new trail is now open to the public, inviting residents and visitors to explore this enhanced natural area at Palisades Park.
