COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial fishing opener across the Inland Northwest, and anglers eager to reel in a trophy catch are getting some expert guidance from Idaho Fish and Game.
Landing a big fish is both exciting and rewarding, but finding those prime fishing spots can be challenging for less experienced anglers.
On Monday, Idaho Fish and Game released a list of locations where trophy-sized fish are commonly caught during spring and summer throughout the state. The good news for North Idaho residents: many of these hotspots are close to home.
Idaho Fish and Game recommends heading to the state’s largest lake, Lake Pend Oreille, to catch huge rainbow trout. According to officials, the lake produces more 20-pound-plus trout than anywhere else in Idaho.
However, they caution that anglers won’t catch these monsters with a bobber and worm from shore. Troll fishing from a boat is recommended for the best results.
For those hoping to snag a “river monster,” the Clearwater River between Lewiston and Riggins is the place to go. Clearwater anglers consistently catch big, ocean-fresh chinook salmon in this stretch says Fish and Game.
If bobber and bait fishing is more your style, Lake Coeur d’Alene earned recognition as the top spot for big largemouth bass. The Snake River also received a nod for impressive bass fishing.
For smallmouth bass, the state says to cast a line at Dworshak Reservoir.
Another North Idaho location, Priest Lake, was named a runner-up for trophy lake trout fishing.
Now before you cast a line in, it’s important to remember that anyone 14 years or older must have a valid Idaho fishing license. Anglers should also familiarize themselves with fishing seasons and regulations, which can be found in the Idaho Fish and Game’s fishing rules booklet.
The full list of big fish locations is available on the Idaho Fish and Game website.
