SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – An early first pitch for a Tuesday afternoon game allowed for around 3,000 elementary school students to swarm Avista Stadium, with teachers bringing the classroom to the ballpark.
This was the second Education Day game for the Spokane Indians this season. The franchise’s goal is to create a fun learning environment for kids while also getting to experience the game-day atmosphere of Avista Stadium.
“We want them to leave here and just be like: I had the best day. I had the best field trip,” said Spokane Indians Vice President and General manager Kyle Day. “Hopefully that leads to them wanting to come this summer or when they grow up and have kids of their own. Hopefully it leaves an impact on them.”
In addition to all the themed games and community events, the Indians also pride themselves for their goal of being a zero-waste franchise.
One way they do so is with their ‘Compost Corner’.
The Indians green team sorts trash after every home game. And with extra kids comes extra trash, so on Tuesday – the front office got their hands dirty.
“Sometimes our front office fills in and supplements [the green team] as well.” said Day. “Especially on a day like today when it’s a day game and some people have other jobs or school. So, we’ll be back there today sorting the recycling sorting the compost making sure the streams are as clean as possible.”
