SPOKANE, Wash. — A red Ford Mustang crashed into River Park Square in downtown Spokane Thursday night, drawing attention from those downtown.
Spokane police responded to the scene just before 9 p.m. Thursday after 20-year-old Omar M. Khairi lost control of his vehicle while speeding east on Main Avenue from Lincoln Street. According to police, Khairi hit a parked car, lost control and then crashed into River Park Square.
Authorities confirmed no one was inside the parked vehicle at the time of the crash and no shoppers were around at the time of the crash.
Khairi was taken to the hospital for minor injuries but showed no signs of impairment at the scene. He has been cited with reckless driving.
“None of the businesses were impacted as pretty isolated. It happened later in the evening, so we’re really fortunate,” said Rita Koefod, River Park Square director of marketing.
The crash prompted an immediate response from both the Spokane Police Department and Spokane Fire Department.
“The Spokane Police Department was fantastic. The Spokane Fire Department they were on site, they assisted. Our team was quickly able to board it up, we’re fully open for business today,” Koefod explained.
By Friday morning, crews were assessing the damage outside and inside the mall, preparing the area for repair.
River Park Square has turned over security footage of the crash to the Spokane Police Department as part of the ongoing investigation.
