SPOKANE, Wash. – Before you know it, you could be ziplining along the Spokane River with the wind in your hair. All that stands in the way now of a downtown Spokane zipline is final approval from the Spokane Park Board and the Spokane City Council.
The Spokane hearing examiner approved the project, with conditions.
Spokane Skylines would be built and operated by Mica Moon Zip Tours, which already operates a zipline in Liberty Lake.
The line would take riders from the Place of Truth Plaza just below Spokane City Hall, under the Monroe Street bridge and onto a platform in Peaceful Valley on the east side of Redband Park.
A shuttle would take riders from the landing point back up to Riverfront Park, to alleviate concerns about traffic and parking in Peaceful Valley.
The hearing examiner says the contractor needs to follow shoreline provisions and create a stormwater pollution prevention plan. Contractors will also need to notify the Spokane Tribe of Indians if any artifacts or human remains are found upon excavation of the property.
The Spokane Tribe had previously been concerned with the landing zone being along the shoreline and said the only appropriate site would be the location that has now been chosen.
After that, the hearing examiner said the tribe had no further concerns.
What Happens Next
Riverfront Park Director Jonathan Moog told a city committee this week that once the hearing examiner decision was in, the final steps would be approval from the Spokane Park Board and the Spokane City Council.
Moog expected that to happen in June.
Councilmembers Michael Cathcart and Jonathan Bingle were both at that meeting and both jokingly said they called “dibs” on who would get the first ride on the zipline.
