SPOKANE, Wash. — Your family may soon enjoy a safer and more walkable South Hill due to two newly launched construction projects.
The first project, which started Monday at the intersection of Grand and 13th just north of Manito Park, will add flashing pedestrian signals at both ends of the crosswalk.
A second project at Cedar and 12th, beginning Tuesday, will include a pedestrian island with flashing lights.
The improvements come to an area where local businesses and residents have long expressed concerns about pedestrian safety.
The Grand and 13th intersection borders the Rockwood and Cliff-Cannon neighborhoods and features several businesses that attract foot traffic.
“Whatever can make it safer for my guests is going to be better for me, too, because people are going to feel more at ease coming to this location other than driving,” said Logan Sevier, general manager of Little Euro, a popular breakfast spot at the intersection.
Despite construction beginning outside the restaurant Monday, Little Euro remained busy with customers enjoying breakfast and freshly-squeezed orange juice.
“It’s super exciting to us to still be here and be busy all the time. So if it impacts the business, hopefully…I know that it’s short lived,” Sevier said.
Bill Doley, Rockwood Neighborhood Council chair also welcomed the improvements.
“I think it’s great that we’re getting the crosswalk with the hawk light because this is not a safe place to cross and we really need a crosswalk,” Doley said. “We have businesses on both sides of the street. I’m a big fan of crosswalks. I’d like to see more crosswalks.”
The second project at Cedar and 12th addresses another area of concern where neighbors say children walk daily amid speeding traffic.
Both safety improvement projects are funded through revenue from photo-enforced radar tickets. The city expects the Grand and 13th project to be completed within approximately one week, while the Cedar and 12th project will continue through early June.
Drivers should expect delays at both intersections during construction.
