SPOKANE, Wash. — You might not be able to turn right at a red light in downtown Spokane after Monday night’s city council meeting.
Spokane City Council is considering a resolution that would ban turning on red at downtown intersections.
If passed, the law would apply mainly to intersections along Main Avenue, which the city has identified as dangerous for pedestrians.
The Riverside Neighborhood Council says laws protecting pedestrians downtown are greatly needed.
“I think Spokane has to make up its mind if it wants to be a walkable city or not. Everybody wants to be pedestrian-friendly, it’s good for business, it’s good for the hotels and it’s good for tourism,” said Pia Hallenberg, Riverside Neighborhood Council chair.
Hallenberg said the neighborhood council hopes the city will take more action to make the streets safer for pedestrians, including targeting intersections like Monroe and Spokane Falls Boulevard.
Spokane City Council will vote on the ‘No Turn on Red’ resolution during Monday night’s city council meeting at 6 p.m.
