SPOKANE, Wash. — The man accused of killing a woman in a suspected gang-related shooting last summer is now being held on $2 million bond.
Couger Devereaux was booked into the Spokane County Jail in April following his arrest in Colorado in March for the shooting.
According to court documents, Deveraux opened fire on a group of people, including his gang rivals, in the early morning hours of July 7, 2024 near Spokane’s Emerson Park.
Detectives believed this shooting was in retaliation to another gang-related shooting in June of 2024 in the Northtown Mall parking lot.
19-year-old Maria, also known as Mary Kapustin, was struck by a bullet that went from her back and through her chest while she sat on the hood of a car.
Many of the group fled from the scene when the shooting took place. Kapustin died at the scene.
“This particular set of conduct was possibly influenced by gang affiliation, but ultimately this conduct was a major affront to community safety,” said the prosecution in court on Wednesday. “Many were endangered by Mr. Deveraux’s conduct, one was actually fatally shot, and Mr. Deveraux was ultimately arrested not in the state of Washington but the state of Colorado.”
Deveraux is facing charges of second-degree murder and drive-by shooting.
An arraignment is scheduled for Deveraux on May 20.
