The long-announced REAL ID requirement finally takes effect on Wednesday. If you have a compliant ID or another valid form of identification, airport security should be normal. Those without face longer waits and additional screening.
Some travelers planned ahead. “I got it about a month ago for this trip to make sure that I could go through the airports,” said Robbie Mullins.
Others cut it close. “I do not [have a REAL ID]. That’s why we’re traveling today instead of tomorrow. I had to pay extra for my ticket for that reason,” explained Dale Bruhl, citing procrastination as the reason.
Procrastination, forgetfulness, and confusion about the deadline are common reasons people haven’t visited the DMV yet.
“I should have got it a long time ago. A long time ago. I had plenty of time,” Bruhl added.
Don’t have a REAL ID? These alternatives work at TSA checkpoints:

If you’re unsure whether your current identification meets the requirements, there are specific markers to look for:
Washington: Look for “Enhanced Drivers License” and an American flagIdaho: The “Star Card” has a star in the upper right corner
Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at TSA checkpoints and do not have an acceptable alternative form of ID will be notified of their non-compliance, may be directed to a separate area and may receive additional screening.
Bruhl warned: “This will be difficult if you don’t have it already. It’s probably going to mess up your travel.”
It’s not too late to get a compliant ID. DMV offices are busy with last-minute applicants, so making an appointment is recommended.
