A month has passed since the Trump Administration implemented widespread tariffs on the U.S.’s trade partners, leaving many wondering if it’s affecting their total at the checkout line.
In March, President Trump placed at 10% baseline tariff on all trade partners, with plans for additional higher tariffs.
Just days later, Trump announced a 90-day pause on the higher tariffs.
To help you keep track of how these tariffs might affect your budget, 4 News Now has been monitoring the costs of basic household items to see how prices go up, go down and stay the same.
In April, we found the following items for these prices:
1 Gold Pineapple at the grocery store (grown in Mexico) – $4.99 1 Barbie Doll at Walmart (made in Indonesia) – $10.971 plain white t-shirt at Walmart (made in Jordan) – $6.98 1 car light bulb at local auto store (made in China) – $7.99
Today, the same brand of pineapple at the same store cost $5.49, $0.50 higher than it cost a month ago.
It’s hard to say if the price increase is related to the tariffs or not. Produce pricing fluctuates constantly, depending on the season, availability and demand.
The rest of the items, the Barbie Doll, white t-shirt and light bulb all cost the same on May 6 as they did on April 3.
However, just because the prices haven’t changed, doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
Once Trump’s 90-day pause ends, prices could rise sharply.
Also, items imported under the tariffs might not yet be on the shelves. According to CNN, the first few cargo ships carrying goods hit by the 145% tariff arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday.
It may take time before these new goods replace stores’ existing inventory.
4 News Now will continue to monitor these costs to see if and how the tariffs affect our local goods.
