COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Coeur d’Alene community gathered Monday to remember a police sergeant who died in the line of duty a decade ago.
Sergeant Greg Moore was a beloved husband, father, friend and CDA Police Sergeant who served the department for 16 years.
“His smile lit up the entire room,” said close friends of Sergeant Moore’s Val Soumas and Becky Stafford.
Ten years ago, Sergeant Moore was shot while responding to reports of a car prowler in a northwest CDA neighborhood. He died just hours later.
Monday’s memorial service in McEuen Park took place at the K27 memorial, a site that honors Sergeant Moore’s call sign while in the department.
The service marked the anniversary of Moore’s death and gave his loved ones space and time to honor his memory.
“We did the Polar Plunge with him and he was just a big personality there. He made it so you forgot how cold you were,” Soumas and Stafford said.
The man who shot and killed Sergeant Moore, Johnathan Renfro, stole Moore’s squad car after he shot him. He was later arrested at a Walmart in Post Falls.
Renfro was sentenced to death for the murder, but is still alive today.
CDA Police Chief Lee White shared meaningful words and memories of Moore at the memorial.
“He was taken from us, doing what he did best, serving and protecting, not only our community, but also the ideals, the values and the freedoms that are so uniquely American,” he said. “It will never be forgotten.”
During his remarks, Chief White said the police and community work together and grieve together.
“We understand that the police and the community are in this together, that we work cooperatively to keep each other safe, and the impact of a loss, such as Greg’s, takes much more time to reconcile,” he said.
Moore’s friends and family said his legacy is a reminder to live each day to the fullest.
“It’s an unfortunate reminder, but a great reminder to us to live every day to the fullest because you never know what day is your last day,” Stafford said.
