SPOKANE, Wash. — The suspect and victim in a fatal shooting at a Maverik gas station were both affiliated with rival criminal street gangs, according to new court documents.
The affidavit of probable cause filed in Spokane County District Court says 18-year-old Quentin Hutchison is accused of using a modified handgun in the shooting death of 24-year-old Timothy Allen Jr. on April 25.
According to the affidavit, Allen Jr. and three others were at the Maverik on Division and Montgomery around 3 a.m. when Hutchison and a group pulled into the station.
The people with Hutchison told detectives Allen Jr. and his group confronted them brandishing firearms and asking gang-related questions about their affiliations.
Allen Jr. and his group also noted the t-shirt being worn by one of Hutchison’s group that memorialized Nathainel Byers. Byers was shot and killed during a robbery at an apartment in Spokane Valley last year. Court docs say Byers also had gang affiliations.
Court documents say Hutchison claimed affiliation with the criminal street gang, Indian Pride Organization, or IPO. Detectives say Allen Jr. and his group had affiliations with a rival gang, Native Gangster Blood, or NGB.
Detectives say Allen Jr. and Hutchison both pulled guns on each other, and multiple shots were fired. Allen Jr. was shot in the head and foot and died at the scene. Another man with Allen Jr. was shot multiple times and hospitalized.
According to detectives, the firearm Hutchison is accused of using had a modifier known as a “switch” which allows a handgun to be fired automatically.
Hutchison turned himself into the police on Monday. He had his first court appearance and faces second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
