SPOKANE, Wash. — Educators wearing red gathered at Riverfront Park to rally for school funding. They asked Governor Bob Ferguson to sign the state’s budget proposal while calling for more education funding.
Teachers at the Lilac Bowl Amphitheater chanted against education cuts and for increased public school funding. The Spokane Education Association supports the proposed budget but says it doesn’t go far enough.
“Employees are way under compensated far too less money, so that is one of the really critical needs is funding classified. And we have never fully funded special education resources for kids,” said Jeremy Shay of the Spokane Education Association.
The rally took place during the Washington Education Association’s annual Representative Assembly, which brought 1,000 delegates from across the state to Spokane.
Educators highlighted two main concerns: better pay for school staff and more funding for special education. They want Governor Ferguson to approve the current budget proposal while recognizing that schools need additional resources.
