SPOKANE, Wash. — A deadly shooting at a Maverik gas station near Division forced nearby businesses to close and left physical damage in the surrounding area.
Police responded to a shooting at the Maverik gas station just after 3 a.m. this morning.
When they arrived, two people had been shot.
One of the injured individuals made it to the hospital for treatment. The other died at the gas station.
Major Crimes blocked off the area to search for evidence before the gas station reopened just after noon. As of now, no one has been arrested for the shooting, and the SPD Major Crimes Unit is still investigating.
The violence affected several neighboring businesses.
Bullet holes were scattered along the Division side of the Hennessey Funeral Home, though fortunately, none of the bullets made it inside.
Sue Belote, office administrator at Hennessey Funeral Home, discovered the damage when she arrived at work.
“I came in the back, so I didn’t notice them right away, but, but when I opened up the doors, I went and looked outside and was a little bit scared of what I saw,” Belote said.
She told reporters there were at least six bullets that grazed the side of the funeral home. While this level of violence is rare, Belote says that she regularly has to call Crime Check when she’s at work.
The Daily Habit coffee stand near the Maverik remained closed until 1 p.m. while the investigation took place.
The owner of The Daily Habit said it was important to her that her customers and employees were safe, but at the same time, it was disappointing to lose half a day of business.
Further down Division, Jeremy Huston, an insurance agent at Finders Insurance, expressed concern but not surprise about the incident.
“Definitely sad. A lot of violence in Spokane, it seems like lately. And hopefully they can do something about it. It just seems way too common these days,” Huston said.
