SPOKANE, Wash. — Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta visited Gonzaga University on Thursday to accept the Thomas Foley Award for Distinguished Service.
Panetta, who served during the Obama administration, has recently drawn national attention for his outspoken criticism of U.S. national security policy under the Trump administration.
During his visit, Panetta expressed both concern for the country’s safety and optimism for its future.
“I think the best hope for our democracy doesn’t rest in Washington. It rests in communities like Spokane and communities like my hometown of Monterey, because their people do work together,” Panetta said.
The Foley Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates integrity and courage in public service.
