AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — The Airway Heights Police Department is mourning the loss of a Legend.
K9 Legend served the city for five years as the second narcotics dog to join the force. He died on Sunday, April 20 from a suspected brain tumor.
During his time in service, K9 Legend and his handler Corporal Dennis Bachman conducted multiple drug busts, both in and outside of the city.
“He knew when it was time to go to work,” Bachman explained. “When I worked my shifts and activated my emergency lights, responding to calls, he’d make a quiet, high-pitched howl in the back of the Tahoe. He was in the game.”
The pair worked together until Bachman was promoted and Legend retired.
“It was an amazing experience,” Bachman said. “To get the promotion, I had to give up my position as a canine handler. I’m happy I chose for him to live with me. I watch our new canine officers, and it’s bittersweet. I mean, these dogs are amazing, too. Just absolutely amazing. I was afforded an incredible experience. Just remember, the dog’s nose…knows.”
After retirement, Legend enjoyed a comfortable life as a family pet where he always smiled, played and remained loyal to the very end.
“The thing about Legend is he was always smiling, which was one of his unique characteristics. The day after his passing, it became surreal when I saw one of his ripped-up tennis balls lying along the driveway. The sight of the ball cut deep. I am just going to leave it where it sits in his memory. I had no idea I would miss him as much as I do.”
