SPOKANE, Wash. — As Earth Day is celebrated around the globe Monday, one local organization is calling on the community to take action to protect and appreciate the Spokane River.
Spokane Riverkeeper, a nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding the health of the Spokane River, acts as a daily steward for the waterway.
Jule Schultz, the organization’s waterkeeper, said their mission is to shift public perception of the river — from a resource to be used, to a treasure to be respected.
“There are so many things you can do on a daily basis that help connect you to the river. But mostly what we want is to get you down to the river — learning about it, connecting with it, respecting it — and then you’ll love and protect it,” said Schultz.
In the past year, the amount of trash collected in the city of Spokane has nearly doubled, emphasizing the need for greater community involvement. Spokane Riverkeeper encourages residents to report pollution and participate in volunteer clean-up efforts.
Those interested in supporting the cause can contribute time or donations. More information is available at the Spokane Riverkeeper website.
