SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane Fire captain jumped into action to save the life of a toddler while on vacation in Mexico.
According to Spokane Fire Department (SFD), Captain Kevin Smith was on vacation in Mexico with his family recently when he noticed a group of people on the beach in distress.
Captain Smith rushed down to the beach and found out a mother and her two children had been swept out to sea.
Without hesitation, Captain Smith jumped into the water and fought against the current to save one of the children caught in the surf.
Captain Smith brought the unconscious girl safely to shore and immediately began rescue breaths. Within minutes, the toddler regained consciousness.
The mother and other child were also rescued safely by bystanders on the beach.
“Firefighters are never truly off duty,” SFD posted on Facebook. “Whether active, retired, or on vacation, they respond when needed. Please join us in recognizing Captain Smith for his courageous and selfless actions that undoubtedly saved the life of a helpless child caught in the ocean’s powerful grip.”
