SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane businesses are no longer allowed to require job applicants to list their home address.
On Monday night, Spokane City Council passed the “Ban the Address” ordinance. The ordinance prohibits employers from requiring job applicants to disclose their address or housing history before receiving a provisional offer of employment.
Supporters of the ordinance say it help protect people experiencing homelessness from discrimination during the job application and interview process.
The vote passed 6-1, with Councilmember Bingle voting against.
Spokane is the first city in the U.S. to adopt a policy like this.
