SPOKANE, Wash. — Water fixtures at Chase Middle School are temporarily shut off or labeled “hand wash only” due to elevated lead levels.
The Washington Department of Health (DOH) tested the school for lead in March. On Wednesday, the results from that test came in and showed six water fixtures in the school had elevated levels of lead.
Spokane Public Schools says it is following the DOH’s action plan and will work to replace the water fixtures at the school.
DOH requires all schools built before 2016 to be tested for lead once every five years. If lead concentration in water is above five parts per billion, that means there is elevated lead levels.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, even low levels of lead in drinking water can have noticeable side effects in children and adults.
