SPOKANE, Wash. — Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) is beautifying the city for upcoming spring events including Bloomsday, Pride, and the Lilac Festival.
In the fall, the organization planted 1,200 tulips.
“It was kind of our spring surprise, this opportunity to see some new flowers that indicate that spring has sprung right here in downtown,” said Elizabeth Hooker of the Downtown Spokane Partnership.
The DSP maintains an 83-square-block area in downtown Spokane year-round.
“It’s an 83 square block right here in the heart of downtown, where we have our clean team that works seven days a week to clean up public spaces and make it look nice and help businesses thrive,” Hooker explained.
With major events approaching, the organization now calls on community members to help with spring cleanup.
“We want to make downtown, like, extra special so that when you’re coming for Bloomsday or Pride or the Lilac Festival, you’re like, wow, what a beautiful place,” said Hooker.
Volunteers can join the spring cleanup to paint over graffiti, clean parking lots and alleyways, and prepare planters for seasonal flowers.
For those who prefer to contribute financially, the DSP offers a planter sponsorship program.
“You can sponsor a planter for $50, and it can be in your name in honor of someone or an organization. And we will showcase those planters to all of our visitors and make sure that it stays beautiful throughout the whole summer into fall,” Hooker said.
The Downtown Spokane Partnership believes these efforts help create community pride among residents.
