SPOKANE, Wash. — A bustling street corner in Spokane may soon become the site of the city’s second Chick-fil-A, prompting mixed reactions from locals.
The proposed location is set to be on Ruby Street, between Mission and Sinto Avenues, just a few blocks from Gonzaga University. Plans for the development include two drive-through lanes, 26 parking spots and entrances from both Mission and Sinto Avenue.
Council Member Jonathon Bingle said the restaurant will benefit the community.
“I think it’s going to be good for the neighborhood. There’s a lot of students there who are going to need some places that they can eat,” he said.
However, the project has sparked concerns among nearby residents, particularly regarding traffic congestion and the potential closure of the Mission-Sinto alleyway.
If the plan for the restaurant is approved, multiple houses will be demolished and the alleyway taken over.
One neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that his tenants frequently use the alleyway and are considering moving out if it is closed.
He said if the city moves forward with vacating the alleyway, he is ready to sue.
Bingle acknowledged the traffic concerns, recalling similar issues when the first Chick-fil-A opened in his district.
“I remember, even during Covid, when the first one opened up in my district, up by Highway 2, the lines were long, and so we’ll have the police out there, and they’ll be managing traffic, and Chick-fil-A will be paying for that, and then it will be fine,” he said.
The public will have an opportunity to give feedback on the potential Chick-fil-A plan during Spokane City Council’s Monday night meeting.
