SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane is installing 50 new bike racks throughout the city this summer to encourage more cycling.
“We want to create more incentives to get people on their bikes and out of cars,” said Erin Hut, City of Spokane Director of Communications and Marketing.
Some racks are already installed while planners determine future locations based on community requests.
“With this program, we’re able to install bike racks and corrals across the city at locations requested by people and businesses,” Hut explained.
The initiative is funded through the city’s contract with Lime Bikes and Scooters. Many new racks will be concentrated around Monroe Street.
The city is also testing more secure bike rack designs, including specialized lockers at City Hall currently reserved for city employees but planned for public use in the future.
This program builds on previous efforts that began in 2020, when Spokane started installing bike corrals featuring murals painted by local artists.
