SPOKANE, Wash. — Indigenous artist kʷaɁowišč tyee Inanna McCarty was chosen to be Spokane Falls Community College’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the sƛ̓ xẹ tkʷ program.
She will work out of the new “sƛ̓ xẹ tkʷ” (ska-hét) Fine Arts building on campus, which is the traditional, Salish name of Spokane Falls and translates to “fast water.”
McCarty descends from the Tsawout First Nations, Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish families, born and raised in the Makah Tribe in Western Washington.
Her artistic skills include painting, beading and metalwork.
“I am eager to hone my skills in metal and jewelry, particularly through creating a copper repoussé sculpture of the Whale Saddle,” said McCarty. “The opportunity to engage with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, participate in professional development, and receive formal instruction in metalsmithing will be a transformational experience for me.”
According to Spokane Colleges, McCarty will explore her creative expression and professional development in the Artist-in-Residency program, connecting with students and local artists to expand her skillsets.
A reception is being held for McCarty at the sƛ̓ xẹ tkʷ Fine and Applied Arts building on April 9, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Her artwork will be on display at the Fine Art Gallery through April 30.
The Artist-in-Residency program is funded by a Spokane Arts’ SAGA grant with additional support from the Sahlin Foundation, Ruby Hospitality, Steam Plant, and SFCC’s Associated Student Government.
