Starting May 7, travelers in the U.S. will need more than just a standard driver’s license to board a flight.
After years of delays a ‘Real ID’ will now be required for domestic travel.
As the deadline approaches, both Washington and Idaho have confirmed that residents can still apply for their respective Real IDs and receive them in time.
In Washington, the ID is known as an Enhanced Driver License, while in Idaho, it’s called a Star Card.
From May 7 onward, travelers will need one of these IDs or a passport to board flights.

“You know, there’s always the hope that the TSA agent will maybe be graceful, but, we’re not expecting them to do that because it’s a federally mandated program. So, odds are they’re not going to bend the rules for just one person,” said Britt Rosenthal, Public Information Officer at Idaho Transportation Department.
For years, the federal government has been pushing back the Real ID deadline, with previous extensions granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, no further extensions are expected.
To obtain a Real ID in both states, residents must apply in person and bring several documents, including:
Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a passport or birth certificate)Proof of residency (like a utility bill or vehicle registration)Proof of identity (such as a current driver’s license or ID card)
