SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Fire Department wants to remind you of some important battery safety tips that could help save your life.
SFD recently released a public service announcement (PSA) about lithium-ion batteries, which are a type of rechargeable battery. They are often found in common household items like cell phones, electric toothbrushes and laptops. In February, a major fire broke out at a lithium battery warehouse in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood. It took hours for the fire department to put out the flames and caused toxic gas to be released into the air. “The improper handling of lithium ion batteries can pose serious fire risks,” said Fire Chief Julie O’Berg in the announcement. The PSA outlines the following “Do’s & Don’ts”: DO: Purchase and use devices that are listed by a qualified testing labAlways use the battery and charging cord designed for your deviceKeep devices and batteries at room temperature Store the batteries away from flammable objects DON’T:Don’t leave devices plugged in once fully chargedNever charge a device under your pillow, on your bed or on a couch Don’t charge devices at temperatures below 32°F or above 105°FNever toss lithium ion batteries in the trash (they need to be properly recycled)”Remember, battery safety goes hand in hand with ensuring your home has enough working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that covers both when you’re awake and when you’re asleep,” said Chief O’Berg.
