COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d’Alene Firefighters said four out of the last six fires they have battled have been kitchen or cooking fires, and three out of the six were in apartments or duplexes.
The latest kitchen fire appeared to happen on the stove at a duplex in Coeur d’Alene Wednesday night.
Firefighters said these kitchen/cooking fires have put 10 families out on the street since the start of the year.
They said at least one woman suffered 2nd degree burns trying to put one of the fires out herself.
In each of these fires, investigators said the apartments each had working smoke alarms, which can save lives.
Firefighters said in many of these fires so far this year, the families did not have renters insurance, so although the building owner’s insurance covers the cost of any building damage, any personal belongings they lost to the fire cannot be replaced.
Coeur d’Alene fire said these kitchen/cooking fires are a reminder to keep an eye on your oven, stove and cooking appliances when cooking, and make sure your smoke alarms work.
It’s not a bad idea to invest in a renters insurance policy, either, if your family can swing it.
