SPOKANE, Wash. — In the wake of several deadly crashes in recent months a local organization is urging the city to take immediate action to enhance street safety.
Street safety advocacy group, Spokane Reimagined, is calling on the city to implement measures that would make streets safer for all Spokane drivers and pedestrians. The group is particularly focused on intersections that have been the site of fatal accidents.
On March 21, a motorcyclist died in a crash near Market Street and Francis Avenue in northeast Spokane. A week later, the intersection remains busy with cars and pedestrians. Spokane Reimagined argues that if the intersection’s layout contributed to the crash, it poses a risk to everyone who uses it.
The group is proposing a resolution that would require Spokane City Council to place vigil cones at the site of a traffic death. The cones would serve as a warning to drivers and provide the city with time to create a plan to improve safety in the area.
“At its core, Spokane is made up of dangerous streets,” said Erik Lowe of Spokane Reimagined. “There’s always something we can do from an infrastructure perspective to make things safer, even if it’s just putting up a sign that says instead of 30 miles an hour, it’s 20 miles an hour until we figure out what we need to do here.”
The proposed measure aims to provide all Spokanites with safe and walkable streets, while also honoring those who have lost their lives in traffic collisions.
The resolution will be presented to the Neighborhood Council Community Assembly tomorrow evening. The group hopes to gain the support of neighborhood councils before bringing the proposal to the City Council for consideration.
