SPOKANE, Wash. — If your family receives Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition benefits, you can now use them online.
Washington WIC launched a new pilot program that allows families to purchase WIC-approved foods online through Walmart. The project is funded by a grant from the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact.
Over 200,000 families in Washington receive WIC benefits. WIC serves parents, pregnant people, infants and children under 5 by providing access to healthy foods like milk, fruits and vegetables. WIC also does health screenings, nutrition education, referrals to other organizations and more.
After adding your WIC card to your Walmart account or through the Walmart app, participants can shop for WIC-approved items on the site. The program will also provide WIC users with better options for finding items that may be out of stock in store but can be shipped.
“Partnering with Walmart helps WIC families who struggle with access to stores or finding WIC-approved foods nearby,” said Brittany Tybo, WIC Director, Washington State Department of Health. “By innovating to provide delivery, shipping, and pickup options, we remove barriers and ensure families can easily access the healthy foods they need in a way that makes sense for them.”
The project runs through the end of the year. It hopes to expand to other retailers after an evaluation period.
