SPOKANE, Wash. — With warmer weather approaching in the Inland Northwest, Spokane Parks and Recreation is preparing the community for spring and summer with its newly released Activity Guide, featuring a wide range of opportunities for all ages and interests.
From sports leagues to outdoor adventures, people can take part in guided hiking, kayaking, or rafting trips, or explore their creative side with classes in art, music, creative writing, and photography. The guide also highlights wellness options, including yoga, barre, and QiGong.
Spokane Parks offers a variety of recreational activities tailored to children, with a focus on fun and fitness. Summer camps, a perennial favorite, tend to fill up quickly, so parents are encouraged to register early.
One of the most popular camps is the Summer Day Camp at Merkel, which features three themes: Adventure & Exploration, STEM & Innovation, and Active & Creative. Campers will engage in hands-on science and engineering challenges and express their creativity through sports and art.
In addition to traditional offerings, Spokane Parks is introducing pre-season swim lessons starting in May, a new initiative aimed at ensuring safety for children in local lakes, rivers, and swimming pools.
“Now is a good time to start thinking about swimming lessons because summer is coming and you want to make sure that your kids have that skill before you go to those pool parties, before your kids go out to the lakes and rivers,” said Josh Oakes, Recreation Supervisor.
These pre-season lessons will begin on Monday, May 10, at the Witter Aquatic Center. Spots for the regular summer swim sessions tend to fill up fast, making these early lessons a valuable opportunity.
