POST FALLS, Idaho — Voters will soon decide on funding for after-school activities, sports and campus security at Post Falls School District.
The replacement levy, if approved, would extend the $44.69 rate Post Falls residents are already paying for the next two years.
The current total levy amount is $5,958,551 per year, for two years.
PFSD Superintendent, Dena Naccarato, said the levy is fundamental.
“The idea that you would have to have every student here every day to get operational funding makes no sense,” she said.
Naccarato said the need for the levy is an indication of some of the shortcomings in Idaho’s system for funding education.
“We’re the 11th largest school district in the state of Idaho and not having a robust activity and athletic program would be unacceptable to our families, I’m sure,” she said.
PFSD said funding from the replacement levy would go toward extracurricular activities and athletics that aren’t funded by state or federal dollars.
It will also go toward staff salaries and improving campus security.
“Calling this ‘supplemental’, I don’t think anyone thinks activities and athletics are supplemental. I don’t think anyone thinks school safety is supplemental. I don’t think anyone thinks attracting and retaining amazing staff is supplemental,” she said.
The district said it receives about $77,000 in funding each year from the state for security, but it spends over a million each year.
Early in-person voting for the May election begins on May 5.
