NEZ PERCE COUNTY, Idaho — Someone impersonating a Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office sergeant attempted to scam a person over the phone last week, according to NPCSO.
On March 11, a Nez Perce County resident received a voicemail from a person claiming to be a Sgt. Wilson with the Sheriff’s Office’s warrants division.
The person said they were reaching out about an important legal matter and asked to be called back.
NPCSO said in a Facebook post the following day that the office does not have a Sgt. Wilson or a warrants division.
“We would also like to remind the public that we’re still in tax season, so scams may be on the rise during this time. Please always be cautious when talking to someone on the phone. Scammers are able to clone numbers to make it seem like the call is actually coming from our office, or any other law enforcement office,” reads the post.
NPCSO said no law enforcement entity will ever call saying you have a warrant or requesting payment in any form.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with law enforcement, your bank or the IRS, it’s safest to hang up and contact the organization directly via a confirmed phone number or in person to verify any communication.
