WASHINGTON — Winter is almost in the rearview mirror, and if you want to avoid a fine, you have until the end of the month to swap out your studded tires.
Washington Department of Transportation says studded tires must be removed by March 31, or drivers risk being fined $137.
Expect auto centers to be busy as the deadline approaches, so WSDOT recommends planning ahead.
According to WSDOT, studded tires are legal in Washington from November 1 to March 31. In warmer months, studded tires cause damage to roads.
“Studded tires cause between $20 million to $29 million in damage to Washington’s state-owned roads each winter, in addition to damaging city and county roads,” said WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin.
WSDOT adds there are no exemptions or “out of state waivers” for studded tired and even visitors to Washington could be penalized.
