SPOKANE, Wash. — Dozens of Washingtonians attended a town hall hosted by U.S. Representative Michael Baumgartner on Monday night.
Community members shared their questions and concerns with Representative Baumgartner, including calling on him to stand up to President Trump.
Several of his responses to the community’s questions sparked heated reactions from the crowd.
Attendees posed concerns about healthcare, veterans affairs, immigration and social security.
“In healthcare, I’ve been working to care for some of our nation’s most vulnerable people, and the current administration’s decisions and policy changes have been incredibly devastating to the people that I’m serving,” said one nursing student.
She asked Representative Baumgartner how he would work to protect her patients.
“Supporting rural health will be a particularly big aspect of what we’ll try to do here in the Congress, so we’ll need to make sure so Medicare and Social Security are not being touched,” he said.
Throughout the evening, Baumgartner reiterated Social Security would not be touched.
4 News Now asked Representative Baumgartner what he learned from the community during the town hall.
He acknowledged he represents all voters in Washington, the nearly 61% who voted for him and the nearly 40% who didn’t.
“I think they have some heartfelt concerns, but I think, we share a lot of concerns, and you certainly learn every time you engage with folks, but there weren’t particularly any of the policy issues here that were new or unique or fresh,” he said.
