POST FALLS, Idaho — If you live between Coeur d’Alene, Spokane and Sandpoint, you will soon have easier access to emergency healthcare.
Kootenai Health and MultiCare are opening a new hospital in Post Falls.
It will be built at the southeast corner of Highway 41 and Prairie Avenue just north of Post Falls High School.
Phase one of the medical expansion will have 12 ER rooms, overnight care, imaging machines, lab services and clinic offices. It will also be the home of Kootenai Health’s new Prairie Medical Campus.
Kootenai Health hope to develop the new 30-acre plot of land over the years to meet the community’s growing needs.
“It’s really growing. Not just Post Falls but rather Hayden, Athol, all those communities are growing rapidly and we want to be able to grow along with them,” said Kootenai Health CEO Jamie Smith.
The amount of people living in the Rathdrum Prairie is expected to double in size over the next 20 years.
“We really believe we need to be where the people are,” said Smith. “We want to be convenient, accessible, affordable and this location is ideal for that.”
Kootenai Health’s Coeur d’Alene campus has already outgrown its current footprint.
“There is limited parking. There’s limited space on the main campus and so it makes sense to try to distribute some of those services,” Smith said.
In order to ensure the same quality of care, many new jobs will also be coming with this new site.
“This is not just a shift from one place to another. It’s actually additional and so we’re going to have jobs. We’re going to need services,” explained Smith.
Kootenai Health plans to break ground on the hospital by the end of the year.
The hospital is anticipated to open some time in the next two to three years.
