Spokane, WA – The man who held a victim hostage near the Chief Garry Park area on Monday evening has been arrested.
At approximately 1:20 p.m., the Spokane Police Department (SPD) responded to a report of an assault at a home near Boone Avenue and Stone Street.
SPD said the male caller told 911 and police that his mother had texted him “get here quick.”

SPD said the son saw his stepfather outside with what appeared to be a firearm. The victim was later found to have been assaulted, held for hours, and threatened with an AR-style rifle. She also reported the suspect made “murder/suicide” threats.
Police identified the suspect as 47-year-old Duane Chickene and developed probable cause to arrest him on charges of second-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, and harassment.
SPD said, due to the involvement of firearms, multiple specialty units, including SWAT, Hostage Negotiators, and the Air Support Unit, surrounded the home.
Officers tried to communicate with Chickene for several hours but were unsuccessful.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers entered the residence, finding multiple firearms, including an AR-15-style rifle. However, the suspect was not inside.
SPD later learned that Chickene had fled to Montana and was a suspect in a vehicle theft.
He was arrested near Babb, Montana, and will be extradited to Washington to face charges.
