SPOKANE, Wash. — Over the next few weeks, you might need to find a different route to drive through downtown Spokane, due to some road closures by Avista.
Starting March 17, Avista will begin replacing a 35-ton crane inside the Avista Post Street Substation.
Post Street will be closed from Spokane Falls Boulevard to the Post Street Bridge from March 24 through April 7.
Foot traffic around the Substation will be redirected to the Centennial Trail.
The Post Street sidewalk will remain open, along with Mobius, City Hall, the gondola and the Numerica Skate Ribbon.
The Post Street Substation receives power generated by the city’s hydroelectric dams and distributes it throughout downtown Spokane. In the 1900s, it housed trolleys that serviced Spokane and the surrounding areas.
The project will replace the Substation’s 115-year-old crane, which was originally used to lift trolleys and is now used to lift Avista’s oversized electrical equipment.
