SPOKANE, Wash. — If you’re waiting for the city to take care of a big pothole on your street, you might not want to hold your breath.
Giant potholes have been reported throughout our area.
The Spokane County Public Works Department said that the freeze and thaw cycles this winter have caused many potholes to appear in the region.
However, making permanent repairs is not currently an option, as temperatures have not yet warmed up.
Instead, they will need to rely on temporary fixes until the weather improves.
“We can use cold mix to patch [potholes] right now, which is effective until it rains, but then the cold mix kind of comes right back out and then we have to go back out and do it again,” said Joel Graff of Spokane Public Works.
Joel Graff stated that they are currently waiting for asphalt plants to produce hot mix for the permanent repairs.
Hot mix, as the name suggests, requires heat to be effective, making it more durable and suitable for our roads.
Unfortunately, the current weather conditions prevent the transportation of hot mix, as it would cool too much and become unusable.
The asphalt plants are scheduled to open on April 1.
