SPOKANE, Wash. — A fire that killed three puppies at a local animal adoption center on Saturday sparked from a common household item.
On March 8, a quarantine trailer at SpokAnimal caught fire. A nearby neighbor saw the flames and called 9-1-1.
“Everyone came running out and one of my staff members called me. I was at home washing my dogs. I literally jumped and ran. I was in my pajamas. It was pretty crazy,” said SpokAnimal Executive Director, Dori Peck.
Spokane Fire Department responded and quickly knocked down the flames, but not in time to save the three puppies inside.
Peck said one chihuahua mix and two Aussie mixes were quarantined in the trailer because they were being treated for parvo, a contagious virus among dogs.
The fire started from a bluetooth speaker that was left charging inside.
It is a mistake Peck said they will never make again.
“The SpokAnimal team is heartbroken, but we will persist with saving lives,” the organization posted on Facebook.
