SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Transit Authority is introducing seven new double-decker buses set to begin service between Spokane and Cheney this September.
Towering nearly 14 feet high, the buses have been turning heads across Spokane County as they undergo testing and training. Once in service, each bus will accommodate up to 120 passengers, offering much-needed relief to the often overcrowded routes serving Eastern Washington University students.
“Everyone is really excited about them,” said Carly Cortright, STA’s chief communications and customer service officer.
Cortright said the new buses are part of STA’s long-term investment in the West Plains region under the agency’s Stay Moving Forward strategic plan.
“This is just part of our commitment to the community. This is one of the last components of our investments into the West Plains.”
Currently, some buses on the Spokane-Cheney route are standing-room only, making the new double-deckers a welcome upgrade.
“They are, I think, really excited about it. It’s just going to be a really new experience for them to be able to sit, possibly do their homework, instead of being in those standing-only loads.”
In addition to more seating, the new buses will feature individual air vents and reading lights for passenger comfort.
The double-deckers will officially hit the road this September.
