SPOKANE, Wash. — Neighborhood Resource Officers have officially returned to Spokane.
In 2023, Spokane Police Department eliminated Neighborhood Resource Officers (NROs) from the department, due to a lack of resources.
Without the NROs, many in Spokane said they felt unheard when reporting crime in their neighborhoods.
In November, The City of Spokane passed the Public Safety Sales Tax, bringing back funding for NROs.
So far, three of the seven positions have been hired.
Officer Deanna Storch is one of the new NROs. She said she is excited to be in the role.
“[I’m excited for] just reconnecting with those within the community and making this positive interactions,” she said.
NROs are different from patrol officers in that they are given more time in their shift to respond to non-emergency reports.
For example, they will try to help you out if you have an issue with someone rummaging through your trash.
“It feels great to be wanted,” said Officer Micha Prim, NRO for downtown and South Spokane. “It feels great to have people reach out and talk to you and want to meet with you and discuss what’s going on. That’s a great feeling.”
